Santa Monica State Beach / Pier

Official sand: Santa Monica State Beach, 1550 Pacific Coast Highway Directions. The structure is 200 Santa Monica Pier Directions. County towers 2–16 north of the pier, 17–29 south. Swim near an open tower — not within 100 yards of the Pier or Tower 12 as of Aug 13. Heal the Bay’s 2025–26 annual card ranks the Pier #2 Beach Bummer: water is consistently unsafe for swimming directly at the Pier. That is chronic character, not this morning’s flag. No dogs on the sand. Metro E Line serves the pier.

Ocean Park / South Beach

Same state beach, south of the pier. There is no separate “Ocean Park Beach” park unit. Beach Park 1 (Dorothy Green) is 2600 Barnard Way at Ocean Park Blvd Directions — picnic, playground, restroom, two fee lots, Perry’s Cafe. Hours 6:00 a.m.–11:00 p.m. South Beach Park is 3400 Barnard Way Directions, on the Venice border, next to the southern-most beach lot. Same hours. Walk to an open tower 17–29, outside the Pier’s 100-yard zone. Park Lot 4S or 5S. No dogs on the sand.

Venice Beach

Two landlords. County Beaches & Harbors runs the sand — almost 3 miles, 238 acres, daylight lifeguards, Venice Breakwater as the named surf spot. City of LA Recreation and Parks runs Ocean Front Walk / the Rec Center at 1800 Ocean Front Walk Directions — that address is the Rec Center, not a lot. Office closed Sunday; the sand and pier are not. Park at 300, 2100, or 3100 Ocean Front Walk. The fishing pier is the Washington end (3100), not Muscle Beach. Swim is the County sand west of the walk. Do not land on the boardwalk and never reach the water.

Venice lots, bikes, transit

  • County lots: 300 (Rose), 2100 (Venice Blvd.), 3100 (Washington) Ocean Front Walk — 6 a.m.–10 p.m.
  • Summer 2026 Board sheet: $9 weekday / $18 weekend-holiday. Pay-and-display or attendant, full-day. No in-and-out. Visa, Mastercard, or $1 and $5 bills, no change. Broken machine: LAZ (310) 821-1081
  • ADA free Mon–Fri at County lots except weekends, County holidays, or an unstaffed gate
  • 1800 Ocean Front Walk is the Rec Center, not a lot
  • Santa Monica: bikes on the Beach Bike-Path (bicycles and Class 1–2 e-bikes). No bikes on the Beach Promenade. E-scooters off both
  • Venice Ocean Front Walk is pedestrian. Rental devices are signed that they may not be ridden on the walk. Use the paved path
  • Metro E Line serves the Santa Monica Pier. The County Beach Shuttle (weekends and holidays through Sep 27) is Playa Vista–Marina del Rey–Venice — it does not serve the state beach or pier. Labor Day Mon Sep 7, 10 a.m.–8 p.m., is that Venice shuttle, not a pier event

Beach safety — who to trust

Skip tourism widgets and rumor flag apps. Heal the Bay, DPH, and NWS are three different things — use all three. Do not mash them into one flag.

  • Rip / surf — NWS LOX Surf Zone Forecast for CAZ364 Los Angeles County Beaches. Latest SRF High means life-threatening rips are likely. The product header says HIGH RIP CURRENT RISK. Friday’s body is Moderate; Saturday is High.
  • Weekly water quality — Heal the Bay Beach Report Card at beachreportcard.org. Friday analysis. Not a live flag. The 2025–26 annual card is how you know the Pier’s chronic character

The vibe

This is one Los Angeles beach day with three official on-ramps — not a city magazine loop. Santa Monica State Beach is the sand: City page 3+ miles / 245 acres at 1550 Pacific Coast Highway Directions, sunrise to sunset (that page’s clock: 6:00 a.m.–7:30 p.m.). The pier at 200 Santa Monica Pier is the deck — rides, food, fishing, photos — jutting out at Ocean and Colorado.

South of the pier, Ocean Park is the same state beach without the carnival: playground and picnic at Beach Park 1 and South Beach Park, on the Venice border. Venice stacks three facilities: Ocean Front Walk (the boardwalk), the paved bike path, and the County sand west of the walk. You can do more than one in a stay. You cannot treat them as the same lot, or the same swim.

On the sand

  • Swim near an open County tower. Not all towers are staffed at all times. Beaches are open every day, including holidays.
  • Do not swim within 100 yards of the Pier or Tower 12 as of Aug 13. Stay 100 yards from storm drains, creeks, and piers as standing advice.
  • After rain: stay out 72 hours after rainfall has ended.
  • A water advisory is not a sand closure. Yellow warning signs mark bacteria over the state standard. White signs mark storm-drain outlets. Red “Beach Closed” is sewage or chemical discharge only.
  • No dogs on Santa Monica beach sands west of Oceanfront Walk, including on a towel.
  • Venice Ocean Front Walk: weekend and holiday dog ban 11 a.m.–8 p.m., Memorial Day–Oct 31, between the Santa Monica line and Washington. Friday, Aug 14 is not that ban.
  • Venice sand and pier: no enter / remain / loiter midnight–5:00 a.m. (LAMC 63.44). Rec Center closed Sunday does not mean the beach is closed.
  • Clocks conflict on purpose. Lots, restrooms (6 a.m.–dusk), and parks (6 a.m.–11 p.m.) are different official clocks. Do not treat one as the others.

What first-time visitors often get wrong

  • Treating the pier as the swim beach — 200 Santa Monica Pier is the deck. The sit and swim sand is the state beach, 245 acres north and south. Water at the Pier is the chronic bad-water stretch
  • Following GPS to Ocean and Colorado — the drive-on is closed through late 2027. The blue Pier sign is scheduled to come down this month. Cars: PCH → Lot 1 North, or the south and north lots the City named
  • Landing on the Venice boardwalk and never reaching the sand — or riding a rental bike on Ocean Front Walk. Boardwalk, bike path, and sand are three stacked facilities
  • Paying Central $20 when North or South Santa Monica is $12 on a weekday, or Venice is $9
  • Mixing Heal the Bay, DPH, and NWS into one flag — weekly grade, posted warning, and rip forecast are different jobs
  • Assuming Rec Center “closed Sunday” means the beach is closed — the office is closed. The sand and pier still exist

Where to stay

Sleep near the stretch you will actually use. Central / pier-adjacent lots are the $20 band inside a construction detour. North lots sit on Pacific Coast Highway. South lots and Ocean Park (4S / 5S) are the playground-and-picnic play. Venice County lots are 6 a.m.–10 p.m. at 300, 2100, and 3100 Ocean Front Walk — no in-and-out.

A stay is the logistics win if you do not want to re-hunt a zoned lot every morning, or stack GPS-to-Colorado on a closed drive-on. The Metro E Line is the no-car arrival for the pier. It is not a substitute for a Venice lot plan if the boardwalk is the day.

Pair the stretch with one official on-sand or on-deck stop. This is not a citywide itinerary.

Santa Monica Pier

200 Santa Monica Pier Directions — rides, food, fishing, photos. Walk the temp pedestrian bridge. Do not treat the water under the pilings as the swim.

Ocean Park parks

Beach Park 1 at 2600 Barnard Way and South Beach Park at 3400 Barnard Way — playground, picnic, grass, restroom. Then walk to an open tower 17–29. Perry’s Cafe is on the Beach Park 1 place page.

Venice Ocean Front Walk

Muscle Beach, skate plaza, volleyball, and the official boardwalk volume. Walk it. Swim on the County sand west of it. The fishing pier is the Washington end, 3100 Ocean Front Walk — not the Rec Center at 1800.

Venice Breakwater

The County-named surf spot on Venice Beach. Same NWS CAZ364 product as the rest of this coast. Swim or surf near an open tower.

The postcard is not the swim

The pier is a separate destination. Sit and swim on Santa Monica State Beach, north or south, near an open tower. Heal the Bay’s 2025–26 card: water is consistently unsafe for swimming directly at the Pier (#2 Beach Bummer). DPH Aug 13 still tapes 100 yards at the Pier and at Tower 12. That is not the whole state beach.

Access

Colorado is closed. The sign is coming down.

The Ocean Avenue → Colorado drive-on is closed through late 2027. Temporary pedestrian bridge about 30 feet south, opened Jun 5. Cars via PCH into Lot 1 North, or Lot 4 South / Lot 3 North / Parking Structure 8. Appian Way is open again (Jul 28). The blue Pier sign is scheduled for temporary removal in August 2026. Exact day is not posted.

Venice

Boardwalk is not the sand

Ocean Front Walk is the promenade. The Marvin Braude Bike Trail is the paved path. The beach is the County sand west of the walk. Park 300 / 2100 / 3100 Ocean Front Walk. 1800 is the Rec Center. The fishing pier is the Washington end.

Water

Three signals, three jobs

Heal the Bay is the weekly and annual water-quality card — check beachreportcard.org; it is not a live flag. DPH is the posted warning on the sand (map and 1-800-525-5662). NWS LOX SRF is the same-day rip and surf. The sign and the open tower are the swim call.
