Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro’s Atlantic beaches all sit in one city: the famous Zona Sul beaches at Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon, along the promenade near the metro; the longer city beach at Barra da Tijuca, reached by metro Line 4 and BRT bus; and the park beaches at Grumari and Prainha farther west.

Parking at a glance

Praia de Copacabana / Ipanema / Leblon (Zona Sul): Walk from MetrôRio (Cardeal Arcoverde / Siqueira Campos / Cantagalo / General Osório). Tourism and metro operator pages describe urban calçadão beach days without a gate fee to step onto the sand. Check the street and garage signs when you park. Through Sat Sep 19, 2026: Cantagalo Acesso A (Miguel Lemos) closed for reforma — use Acesso B (Xavier da Silveira).

Praia da Barra da Tijuca: Linha 4 to Jardim Oceânico / Barra da Tijuca (multimodal BRT tip; MetrôRio integração via Acesso C). Metro-to-BRT transfers work only at Jardim Oceânico (Barra) and Vicente de Carvalho (Zona Norte); the combined fare is R$ 9,70. Stretch sand deeper along Avenida Lúcio Costa / Recreio often needs BRT / bus beyond the metro tip.

Praia de Grumari / Praia da Prainha: SMAC PNM parks west of Recreio — Av. Estado da Guanabara from Recreio dos Bandeirantes (or estrada de Grumari from Barra de Guaratiba for Grumari). Hours terça–domingo 6h–17h (Decree 20.358/2001 for Prainha). Monday / after-17h: plan Zona Sul or Barra instead. In past summers, the city’s Operação Verão notices have limited car entry to lot capacity (600 at Grumari and 200 at Prainha in one notice). Check the current notice before you drive.

Praia do Leblon

Visit Brasil listed with Copacabana / Ipanema / Arpoador / Leme as same charming setting. Corridor: Avenida Delfim Moreira.
