Notes before you pack

  • Flags: Safeswim (Auckland Council and Surf Life Saving New Zealand) — water quality pins, SLSNZ red/yellow patrol flags, hazard uploads; physical red flag when too dangerous. On-duty lifeguards and physical flags are authoritative when present. Mid-September often outside peak volunteer season — check Safeswim per beach. Emergency if someone is in trouble and no lifeguards visible: 111.
  • Dogs: Auckland Council dog access is beach-specific on each park page (summer often 1 Dec–1 Mar); default on-leash in parks unless the park’s dog-walking section states otherwise; always follow website rules over mismatched signs — 09 301 0101. Mission Bay / Takapuna / Ōrewa publish summer daytime beach prohibitions; Piha / Karekare Waitākere maps prohibit dogs on large beach sections. Rules for dogs in public places.
  • Auckland Council parks / regional parks are smokefree.
  • Piha / Karekare: check open/closed tracks for Waitākere kauri dieback closures before combining beach and tramp — sand entry itself is separate from hinterland track status.
  • Check Auckland Transport street parking prices in AT Park, on the machines or on the signs.
